Jonathan Calder on Bobby Fischer

By way of penance for missing Liberal England off my blogroll for 20 months, I'd like to link to Jonathan's excellent post on Bobby Fischer. Like Jonathan, I was glued to the reports of the Fischer-Spassky match and, as Jonathan observes, it was all downhill for Fischer after that. But what a trumph it was! In Jonathan's words:

Once Fischer got going in the match he all but blew Spassky away.

There is an excellent write-up in the Guardian today. In a piece entitled "Death of a madman driven sane by chess", Stephen Moss quotes the former British chess champion, Bill Hartson saying:

Chess doesn't drive people mad, it keeps mad people sane.

Jonathan Calder touches on that same theme by quoting Dryden:

Great wits are sure to madness near allied
