Will Bloomberg put the cat amongst the pigeons in the US?

The Guardian reports that Michael Bloomberg is thinking very seriously of running for US President as an Independent. He's spending millions on polling to inform his choice.

If I was a Republican leaflet deliverer in New York, I would be pretty cheesed off about this.

Bloomberg was elected as a Republican Mayor of New York. So this independent nonsense must stick in the craw of Republican pavement sloggers in uptown downtown New York...or whatever they call it.

But the other thing is that, if he does run, he is going to well and truly snaffle the chances of the Republican candidate, whoever he turns out to be. (That statement carries the normal caveat that anything I (or most other people, except Duncan Borrowman of course, will probably be wrong).

Many people think that Bill Clinton has Ross Perot to thank for his presidency. (And, indeed, that Al Gore has Ralph Nader to not thank for his non-presidency).
