Mary Reid asked Chris Huhne about local government this evening. I was very impressed by Chris' answers. I became a councillor in 2000 simply because I wanted people to feel more connected to the local government process.
Chris emphasised that councillors should have more power so that people see them as their connection to the government process - someone who can explain how to contact their MP or get other things done, but also who has more real power to change things.
Repeatedly, Chris talked about giving power to local communities as the key to effectively using all the extra money recently, and ineffectively, poured into education and the NHS.
He cited Bernard Greaves' ideas as the model.
