Max Hastings thinks Boris Johnson and Ken Livingstone are equally reckless, in different ways. But Hastings is backing Johnson in the London Mayoral race because he thinks Johnson is "a much nicer bloke". His argument is nothing a great deal more substantial than that.
Random facts: Max Hastings went to Charterhouse. Boris Johnson went to Eton. Ken Livingstone went to Tulse Hill Comprehensive. Perhaps those facts have something to do with this "gut feel" which Hastings is expressing.
