CNN has an excellent analysis of the "lipstick on a pig" USA national crisis whipped up by John McCain.
It is a common US phrase which Obama used before Palin cam on the scene, and McCain has used at least twice recently:
In Iowa last October, McCain drew comparisons between Hillary Clinton's current health care plan and the one she championed in 1993: "I think they put some lipstick on the pig, but it's still a pig." He used roughly the same line in May, after effectively claiming the Republican nomination.
Even Republican Mike Huckabee has supported Obama on this one, saying that it was just a common phrase and that Obama had clearly "not referenced" Palin before he said it.
