Portillo: Tories may never win a general election again

On last night's This Week on BBC1, Andrew Neil asked Michael Portillo if it is possible that the Conservatives will never win a general election again. Portillo's answer was "yes".

That is interesting and perhaps reflects Portillo's rather semi-detached relationship with the Tories at the moment. Even Diane Abbott disagreed with him.

Kelvin MacKenzie was also on the programme, ranting in the most loud-mouthed way about David Cameron. He wants him replaced as Tory leader by "anybody". The trouble is, the moment you
try to give that "anybody" a name (George Osbourne, David Davis, Liam Fox, William Hague...) the replacement argument instantly disintegrates.

  1. David Laws? I doubt that the Tories are yet desperate enough to choose a Lib Dem as their new leader.

I've always thought that Portillo is quite liberal for a Tory. Perhaps he could be invited to the Lib Dems?

  2. Oh, I thought it was David Laws, but I must have misread it. David Davis, I can see. It must be because the Tories are so desperate to get him.
