Wozza is a total smoking numpty

"Wozza" is celebrity chef Antony Worrall-Thompson,whose full name is Henry Antony Cardew Worrall Thompson. He once said that he wanted to be a Conservative MP. More than that, he said that he quite fancied succeeding Michael Heseltine as MP for Henley.

So, the British public could have been treated to "Wozza" as the MP for Henley, instead of that apology itinerist, Bozza.

Are we better off, as things turned out? You decide.

Any road up, because of his credentials above, you would be right in thinking that my opinion of "Wozza" is that he is a complete....well "Wozza" really.

All this is leading to his appearance on GMTV, that TV station have to watch as part of my matrimonial contract. It was this morning.

He was "up against" Dr Hilary Jones, GMTV's doctor.

I don't mind telling you that I quite like the cut of Hilary Jones' jib. He is an all-round good egg, particularly as he regularly warns about the symptoms of meningitis, a disease which killed son. I am also mesmerised by his hair. I have seen him "in the flesh" and it is extraordinary how he looks, on screen, as though he has a full head of hair. But that doesn't diminish his all-round good eggness. He is a TV performer, after all.

Any road up (2), Wozza is a total numpty. He is campaigning against the smoking ban. He appeared in a smoking jacket at the Savoy to make the point. It was in Telegraph today. He had a barney with Hilary Jones on GMTV. Wozza was saying that the smoking ban is disgusting and that it will make people smoke at home where they will cause more harm to their family. When pressed by Jones, who cited a hero of mine, Roy Castle (who died of lung cancer despite never having smoked due, probably, to his playing the trumpet in smoke-filled working mens' clubs), Wozza said that there is "no evidence that passive smoking harms anyone".

What a complete Wozza.

The gist of this rambling post is that dear old Hilary Jones, bless him, gave Wozza "what for" and gently and smilingly pointed out that there is "unequivocal" evidence that passive smoking is harmful.

What beats me is that Wozza (who you will notice has now escaped his inverted commas) spends his life making fine things for people to put in their mouth, then defends people who stick poisonous tobacco sticks in their mouth. I would have thought he would have realised by now that his involvement with the smoking lobby is all a bit counter-productive when you take his life in the round.

  1. Maybe, in reality, his food ain't all that - and he prefers diners with smoke-impared tastebuds?

  2. Antony Worral Thompson is awaful in every incarnation. The BBC usd to have an obession with letting him take oever and ruin BBC programmes that had run for a long time quite happily withoutr him (The Food and Drink Program, Saturday Kitchen), before ITV agreed to pay him an enormous amount to transfer and wreck their Saturday schedule.

The fact that he is invited on to TV shows to talk about politics as a chef, when he is a rabid Tory always annoys me.

  3. There is no justification for the ban on health grounds - it is not the government's place.

Also, the evidence over passive smoking is non-conclusive (Roy Castle is not evidence, merely anecdote).

When studies performed by groups which want to show a link fail to, it does undermine the fallacious health argument.

As for the tendancy for Doctors to stick their nose in policy making all the time - they can give us advice on how to live our lives for a healthy life, but they should stop there. They should not be seeking to force us to live how they think we should.

  5. Health & Safety Executive....
    Colin Grainger
    18th January 2008.

    ...or the Ministry of Truth?

In George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty Four the main character is Winston Smith. Winston works at the Ministry of Truth and spends his days re-writing the news. You see, previous reports now compromise the Party and need to be altered, with all existing copies destroyed.

In a sinister move, our very own Health & Safety Executive have rewritten a document concerning second hand smoke. The two documents I show you here are called Operational Circulars.

    Lets have a look.

    This is OC 255-15:

9 The evidential link between individual circumstances of exposure to risk in exempted premises will be hard to establish. In essence, HSE cannot produce epidemiological evidence to link levels of exposure to SHS to the raised risk of contracting specific diseases and it is therefore difficult to prove health-related breaches of the Health and Safety at Work Act.

Then, the smoking ban is announced.

So we get a re-written version of the same document, which was not due for review until 2011. (on the 7th August, to be precise).

They call this one OC 255-16:

14 The evidential link between individual circumstances of exposure to risk in exempted premises will be hard to establish.

And from the same document we see:

OC 255/15 – cancel and destroy

Unfortunately, Mr HS&E, your own Winston wasn't fast enough. We captured this ridiculous attempt and we keep it safe. We thought it was time for the public to see just how the Labour Party control your every move.

We just have a couple of simple questions for the HS&E.

If you were unable to produce "epidemiological evidence to link levels of exposure to SHS to the raised risk of contracting specific diseases", on the 30th June 2007, were you able to on the 1st July 2007?

And if so, can we see it?

We have been searching high and low for any real evidence that second hand smoke is harmful for more than three years. We found none.

If you had it all along, it was very naughty of you not to share. The entire scientific community has been trying, without success, to prove that SHS harms for 60 years.

    Please let us see it.

    It would be doubleplusgood.
